New technologies offer the potential to upend the world we live in. From the beginnings of the industrial revolution continual growth – of production, consumption and population – has underpinned the economy. This growth has generated enormous wealth and shaped every aspect of our lives – from the cities we live in, to the policies that govern us. It has also caused the current ecological crisis. Technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics now provide an opportunity for a fundamental paradigm shift. More no longer need be the catch cry. The cycle can be broken. To be effective mass production requires mass consumption and mass population. With the technologies now emerging there is an opportunity to provide cheap goods – and services – at an individual scale The need to constantly promote consumption and increase the population is thus eliminated. Indeed shrinking the population while maintaining – or improving – current living standards becomes a possibility. Imagine what this could mean – less pollution, less CO2 in the atmosphere, less pressure on natural resources… Realising this opportunity however requires a complete root and branch change of mindset.
